Herbert Mayow Adams


 

1893-1985.  Librarian and honorary fellow of Trinity. Herbert Mayow AdamsPreviously employed by a firm of anti­quarian booksellers, he completed the entire re-cataloguing of his library and compiled the Catalogue of the books printed on the Continent of Europe 1501-1600 in Cambridge libraries. 2v. (1967). He was the founding President of the Cambridge Library Group (1950) and President of the Bibliographical Society (1954-1956).

Herbert Mayow Adams was Librarian for thirty-four years, and was made an Honorary Fellow in recognition of his services.  When he had completed the recataloguing of the College Library he searched out early printed books in all other Cambridge libraries and by means of full descriptions made them better known.  He was remarkable for his learning, application and modesty.  He died in 1985 at the age of ninety-one.
